City warns residents of scammers posing as Livonia officials

The City of Livonia says scammers are impersonating city departments, commissions and even city employees by phone, email, text message and social media, and some of the messages look convincing. The city is asking residents not to call any number provided in a suspicious message and instead verify the request using the numbers listed at Livonia.gov/Directory. Other tips: watch for urgent or threatening language, check email addresses and links carefully for misspellings, and never share sensitive information until a request is confirmed legitimate. Residents who spot a suspicious message are asked to report it to the appropriate city department.

Canada tariffs could raise prices for Michigan consumers, business leader warns

An escalating trade fight between the United States and Canada could drive up prices for Michigan consumers and disrupt the state's auto industry, Detroit Regional Chamber President and CEO Sandy Baruah said Wednesday. President Trump is threatening 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel beginning next year; Canada has threatened dollar-for-dollar retaliation beginning Sept. 8. “Higher prices for, you know, home remodels, home building, with paper products, plywood, furniture,” Baruah said. “We're gonna see higher prices for automobiles at a time when we have … the highest new car prices we've ever seen.” Baruah pointed to aluminum specifically, saying Canada's hydropower makes its aluminum cheap to produce and important to U.S. automakers: “We really need that aluminum to build our cars here in the United States.”
