Hardwood Progress: Troy Athens Basketball Continues to Climb

The Troy Athens boys' basketball program is finding its rhythm under a familiar face. Head Coach Mitch Vercellino, now in his 11th year with the Red Hawks and second at the varsity helm, is focused on steady growth and maintaining the momentum that revitalized the program just a year ago.

Maintaining the Standard

Last season was a milestone for Athens, as the team captured a District Championship for the first time in over a decade. It was a breakthrough moment that proved the Hawks could compete at a high level.

Currently battling in the OAA Blue, the team sits around the .500 mark. While the schedule is demanding, the focus remains on development.

"Red Hawk basketball is a huge part of my life, and I am proud of the direction of our program," says Vercellino. "We look forward to continuing to develop our players both athletically and academically."

Player Spotlight: Alan Spahic

A significant part of the Hawks' identity this season is junior Alan Spahic. The forward has been a consistent force in the paint and on the perimeter, posting impressive numbers:

• Scoring: 16 PPG
• Rebounding: 10 RPG
• Next Level: His "double-double" consistency has already begun drawing interest from college recruiters.

Community Involvement

The program’s footprint extends beyond the gym walls. Coach Vercellino emphasizes character and service as core components of being a Red Hawk. Recently, the team participated in the district’s MLK Day of Service, and this past summer, the players spent time at the Troy Community Center leading a skills camp for elementary and middle school students.

As the Hawks push through the second half of their schedule, the emphasis is clear: stay disciplined, stay involved, and keep moving the program forward.
