Corewell Health announces $440 million tower for its Troy hospital

Corewell Health says it will invest roughly $440 million to build a new eight-story, 423,000-square-foot tower at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, adding 180 private rooms, a new emergency department waiting area and direct access from the parking deck to the ER. It's part of a $1.7 billion system-wide investment that also funds an 11-story, $1.3 billion expansion of Corewell's Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Corewell's Troy ER sees more than 106,000 visits a year, according to the provider.

“This is a once-in-a-generation investment in Michigan's healthcare future,” said Corewell Health President and CEO Tina Freese Decker. Troy Mayor Ethan Baker called the project a reflection of “the continued growth and vitality of Troy and the surrounding region.” Construction on both towers is expected to begin in summer 2027 and finish by 2030.

FBI searches Troy behavioral health provider's offices and CEO's home

Federal agents searched locations tied to Quality Behavioral Health, including its Troy site, around 6 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, and also entered the Troy home of CEO Naveed Syed that morning. FBI spokesperson Jordan Hall confirmed agents were present in Troy, Eastpointe and Detroit that day but would not say what prompted the searches. Syed's attorney, Arthur Weiss, said Syed's accounts have been frozen, raising concerns about payroll: “His life has been turned upside down.”

Quality Behavioral Health is a contracted provider for the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network (DWIHN), which serves more than 123,000 people a year. DWIHN President and CEO James E. White said the trust patients place in the provider network “is something we take seriously every single day.” A Detroit News review of the organization's IRS Form 990 found it reported $8.96 million in revenue against $7.01 million in expenses for the fiscal year ending September 2024, with Syed earning $198,000 that year; that filing is not corroborated elsewhere in this report. Neither Syed nor the organization has been charged with wrongdoing.

Troy High's Gary Fralick, a 500-game winner, retires after 32 years

Gary Fralick, Troy High's varsity boys basketball head coach since 1994, told his players Tuesday that he's retiring. He collected his 500th career victory last season, a 63-47 win over Royal Oak on Jan. 22, and led the Colts to multiple OAA division and district titles, most recently in 2023, plus a 2017 regional championship.

“It's been a really difficult decision for me, because Troy is a special place,” Fralick said. His coaching career began in 1974 at Kensington Academy, with stops at Redford Thurston and Royal Oak Kimball before he joined Troy's staff in 1988 and took over the varsity program in 1994. “Coach Fralick is one of the best coaches in the state,” said Hayden Oriol, who led the Colts with 21 points in the 500th-win game.

Boulan Park robotics team preps for its next FIRST Tech Challenge season

Apex Warriors, a robotics team from Boulan Park Middle School in the Troy School District, is gearing up for a second season after qualifying for the FIRST Tech Challenge state championship and competing at the Michiana Premier in Indiana in 2025-26. The team, coached by Nazneen Jafri and supported by the Troy Robotics Foundation, builds and programs its robot, Oscar, and has partnered with Amazon Robotics and KPIT on community outreach. “We've won multiple awards with design, innovate and control,” said team member Rayhaan Jafri.

Canada tariffs could raise prices for Michigan consumers, business leader warns

An escalating trade fight between the United States and Canada could drive up prices for Michigan consumers and disrupt the state's auto industry, Detroit Regional Chamber President and CEO Sandy Baruah said Wednesday. President Trump is threatening 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel beginning next year; Canada has threatened dollar-for-dollar retaliation beginning Sept. 8. “Higher prices for, you know, home remodels, home building, with paper products, plywood, furniture,” Baruah said.
