Dominance on the Mat: Troy Athens Wrestling Secures Back-to-Back League Titles

In the high-intensity world of high school wrestling, success isn't just about the individual standing in the center of the circle; it’s about the army of athletes waiting in the wings. For the Troy Athens RedHawks, that philosophy of depth has propelled them to a historic season, culminating this week in a definitive claim to the throne.
Following a dominant performance this past Wednesday, the RedHawks dismantled Seaholm (71–6) and Royal Oak (74–3) to officially secure back-to-back league championships. The victories pushed their season record to an impressive 20–8, solidifying Athens as a powerhouse in Oakland County.
A Culture of Aggression
Head Coach Robby Keyes attributes the team’s success to a "next man up" mentality and a relentless pursuit of bonus points.
"Depth is everything in wrestling. We don’t get to 18 wins at this point in the season without having multiple guys at each weight ready to step in and compete. Our wrestlers go out with the mentality to dominate, to score bonus points."
The numbers back up the talk. The varsity squad has combined for 369 wins this season, utilizing various methods to achieve match dominance:

- Derek Gonzalez (So.): Runner-up at 120 lbs at the Oakland County Tournament.
- Stephen Lezotte (Sr.): Runner-up at 157 lbs at the Oakland County Tournament and celebrated his 100th career victory on January 14.
- Will Goetz (Jr.): Third place at 215 lbs at the Oakland County Tournament.
Community and Tradition
The momentum continues this weekend as Athens High School transforms into a hub for the local wrestling community. On Saturday, the school will host a team wrestling tournament, followed by a youth tournament on Sunday hosted by the local RedHawks Wrestling Club.
With a 64–16 rivalry win over Troy High and a third-place finish at the Southgate Anderson Team Tournament already under their belts, the RedHawks are hitting their stride at exactly the right time.
