The Edwin Denby High School varsity boys basketball team has emerged as a frontrunner in the Detroit Public II league, ending the 2025 calendar year with a four-game winning streak. Currently sitting at 5-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league play, the Tars have displayed a high-octane offense, averaging over 65 points per game in their recent victories.
After a tough 48-hour stretch in early December where the team dropped back-to-back games to Western International and Renaissance, Denby found its rhythm. The turning point came on December 12 with a dominant 81-62 victory over Pershing, followed by a hard-fought win against Central High School. The Tars' resilience was further tested during the holiday break, where they secured narrow but decisive wins over Bloomfield Hills and Westside Christian Academy.
As the team transitions into the heart of the league schedule in January, defensive consistency will be the priority. With upcoming matchups against rivals like Southeastern and Douglass, the Tars are in a prime position to secure a top seed for the MHSAA Division 2 district tournament this March.
