The Mumford Mustangs varsity basketball team heads into the new year with a 5-6 record that tells two very different stories. On one hand, Mumford has been a juggernaut in league play, sitting atop the Detroit Public I standings with a perfect 4-0 record. On the other, a grueling December showcase schedule has tested the team’s depth, resulting in six consecutive losses against some of Michigan’s elite programs.
The season began with fireworks as the Mustangs stormed to five straight wins. Notable performances included a high-scoring 85-75 victory over Pershing and a statement 77-72 win against a tough Belleville squad. However, the latter half of December saw the Mustangs facing a "who's who" of state contenders in events like the Motor City Roundball Classic and the D Zone Showcase. Despite a narrow 2-point loss to North Farmington and a hard-fought battle against East Kentwood, the Mustangs are looking to tighten their defensive rotations as they return to conference action.

Outlook
While the recent scoreboard hasn't favored the Mustangs, the experience gained against Top-20 opponents is expected to pay dividends. With the heart of the Detroit Public I schedule approaching in January, Mumford remains the favorite to clinch the division title if they can rediscover the defensive intensity seen during their opening five-game win streak.
