Sheffield and Bettison respond after activist's arrest over social media posts

Two accounts of this timeline disagree and are reported here as given.

Activist Jahdante Smith says he posted old photos of Mayor Mary Sheffield with a former boyfriend, Marvin Walker, to draw attention to unrelated community concerns, and that Police Chief Todd Bettison called him and asked him to take the photos down. Smith refused; on Aug. 19 near Hart Plaza, officers handcuffed him in front of his 7-year-old son and seized his phone.

Bettison says his request was personal, not on Sheffield's behalf: “I asked Mr. Smith to remove the photos because, as a man and a father, I found them to be inappropriate.” He said the criminal investigation into Smith “is completely unrelated to this matter and began before my phone call with him on August 5.” FOX 2 Detroit reports the search warrant Smith later received is dated Aug. 12 — a week after that call.

Sheffield said in a statement that private photos and communications have been used to “bully, harass and intimidate” her over the past year, and that Walker, whom she dated years ago, “is fabricating lies in an obvious attempt to protect himself from his own criminal and legal troubles.” She said Walker never received city funds or a city contract, and that a $1,800 payment he received in 2019 came from a nonprofit for community-event services, like other vendors.

FBI's search of Troy behavioral health provider reaches Detroit sites

Federal agents searched locations tied to Quality Behavioral Health, including facilities in Detroit and Troy, around 6 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, and the Troy home of CEO Naveed Syed. FBI spokesperson Jordan Hall confirmed agents were present in Detroit, Troy and Eastpointe that day but would not say what prompted the searches.

Quality Behavioral Health is a contracted provider for the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network (DWIHN), which serves more than 123,000 people a year. DWIHN President and CEO James E. White said the trust patients place in the provider network “is something we take seriously every single day.” Syed's attorney, Arthur Weiss, said Syed's accounts have been frozen, raising concerns about payroll and the organization's ability to keep serving patients. Neither Syed nor the organization has been charged with wrongdoing.

Leland tenants fight for compensation in bankruptcy court

The Leland, a long-troubled downtown building on Bagley Street and Cass Avenue, sold three months ago for nearly $3 million to Mudhish Development Company LLC, but the question of compensating tenants displaced by a Dec. 10 power failure was argued in federal bankruptcy court Thursday. Judge Maria Oxholm granted the city's motion to claim nearly $724,000 in expenses for relocating tenants, but denied the Detroit Tenants Union's request that $16,000 go to each displaced tenant, citing insufficient evidence.

“Folks are tired,” union president Stephen Rimmer said. “They feel beat up at this point because the city has challenged us at every turn.” City Corporation Counsel Conrad Mallett said the city has provided direct housing services, packing, moving and storage for displaced tenants. Bishop Dennis Walker, who lived in the Leland 34 years, said his wife Jessie Walker was hospitalized the day of the power failure and “never made it to the hotel.” The next hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 3.

Woman, 21, charged after unsecured handgun wounds 13-year-old sister

Adriana Arnold, 21, of Detroit has been charged with careless discharge of a firearm causing injury after her 13-year-old sister was shot in the left arm, the Wayne County Prosecutor's office said. Police were called to the 16100 block of Chatham Street around 1:50 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25; prosecutors say Arnold found an unsecured handgun in a bathroom of the home and it discharged while she was handling it. The girl was treated at a hospital; the shooting was not fatal. Arnold was arraigned Thursday, Aug. 27, in 36th District Court on a $10,000 personal bond. Her probable cause conference is set for Sept. 8, her preliminary examination for Sept. 14.

Canada tariffs could raise prices for Michigan consumers, business leader warns

An escalating trade fight between the United States and Canada could drive up prices for Michigan consumers and disrupt the state's auto industry, Detroit Regional Chamber President and CEO Sandy Baruah said Wednesday. President Trump is threatening 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel beginning next year; Canada has threatened dollar-for-dollar retaliation beginning Sept. 8.
